Greening of Detroit
in May
Hands-On Mission has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Detroit over the last several years to build homes in the Morningside Community of east Detroit.   With the help of congregations in the Presbytery, volunteers have been provided for construction work and hospitality during Phases I and II.
Greening of Detroit is the planting of trees throughout the city to beautify the Detroit landscape.

AmeriCorp: An Inbound Group to Pontiac & Southfield

The AmeriCorps team, known as Maple 7, worked at Pontiac's Baldwin Center and in the Rising Stars Mentoring Program sites around Pontiac.  The Baldwin Center's mission is to feed, clothe, educate and empower the men, women and children of the Pontiac community.   Some of Maple 7's activities include reading, games, crafts and helping with snack time for the kids.   The Maple 7 Team worked during school hours at the Baldwin Center in the community garden, the clothing closet and construction projects.   After school hours, the Team members were mentors at Southfield Regional Academic Campus.   Maple 7 Team was the volunteer force for the Oakland County Child Care Council's Rising Stars Mentoring Program.
Please share with us your pictures of your volunteer experiences at Hands-On Mission events.

Sorting non-surgical miscellaneous medical supplies for distribution to countries able to use products was the work of the day.  It is frugal, environmentally wise, economically responsible and the right thing to do to share these excesses with others, whether local in Detroit or in 50 other countries.    Good stewardship is the daily work of staff at World Medical Relief  and had the hands of Eugene Hsieh of The Taiwanese Fellowship of Royal Oak, Warfield Moore of St. John's Presbyterian and Nancy Massey of Trinity Community Presbyterian.    We were also at World Medical Relief on January 22nd for a work day.

Katrina Spring Mission in Olive Tree, LA
Five members of the Presbytery traveled to Texas by car, RV and airplane to work in the PDA camp at Texas City.  This is significant because in May 2011, this camp is closing.   Since 2009, Texas City has hosted many from across the national in work that repaired homes.  This spring Detroit Presbytery sent its second group coordinated by Stephen Benton of Grosse Ile Presbyterian.  Marilyn Marble is the Village Manager and a former member of Littlefield Presbyterian Church.
          First Great Tomato Give Away
Garden Gatherers, a Detroit Presbytery sponsored initiative distributed over 1,000 tomato plants to 22 churches on May 21, 2011.   The focus of the program was to make children and adults aware of the many people in Metro Detroit who go to bed hungry.  The tomato plants were distributed to the Sunday School children after church service.   The children will be helping to feed the hungry by donating the tomatoes when they ripen.
The picture to the left shows Harold Ellis, his wife Elaine, their grandson Jeremiah from St. John's Presbyterian, and Judith Sheldon from Fort Street Presbyterian churches picking up tomato plants for the Great Tomato Give Away.   Call Phil Cavaretta at 734-765-9622 for more information.
